The recent glut in oil prices has had many profound effects on the global Macroeconomy. The Organization of Petroleum-Exporting Countries (OPEC), in particular is put in a difficult economic situation due to the price shock. OPEC is made up both large and small economies, from Saudi Arabia to Angola, but in its charter states that it will “protect the collective interests of the member states.” This committee will analyze how the price shocks have disproportionately affected the smaller states in OPEC, and what the organization should do in order to continue protecting the interests of all the member states.
02
The focus of this Committee is health care insecurity. We will begin by analyzing the insurance and healthcare systems in China and the US. We will examine how different systems contribute to or attenuate economic imbalances, health outcomes, and levels of violence, education, and happiness. We will also brainstorm ideas and actions that might alleviate the adverse consequences faced by those of lower socioeconomic status, specifically by investigating why specific parts of the world have especially good or poor health outcomes. Lastly, we will explore the manners in which residents attempt to escape their health care or insurance systems.

03
No one would argue with the fact that having an acceptable form of housing is a crucial prerequisite to leading a healthy and productive life. However, little to no attention is being paid to the global housing problem that has become a full-fledged emergency within the last decade. It is truly a global phenomenon, for underdeveloped, developing, and developed countries alike are all facing many of the same plights: rising inequality in urban areas, the decline of investment in and the availability of affordable housing, and the growth of urban slums, just to name a few. In committee, we hope to look at the underlying currents that propel this crisis and then begin to form and consider possible global solutions to provide the basic need of shelter to those currently lacking it.

04
Here is the description: This committee will reflect on the use of microfinance as a tool to reduce poverty in developing countries. In theory, microfinance spurs entrepreneurship and develops habits of credit for citizens who would otherwise lack access to banking institutions. Delegates will explore the potential impacts of microfinance, as well as current barriers to its further spread. Delegates will contemplate first, whether they believe microfinance is a poverty reduction tool that the international community should enhance, and second, if so, how the international community can develop additional economic incentives to increase the reach of microfinance.

05
The world is changing faster than ever, and over the past decade an unprecedented growth in entrepreneurship has developed globally. Entrepreneurship, defined as the creation of new and valuable products and companies without regard to resources, has led to the creation of notable companies such as Alibaba, TOMS Shoes, and many others. As these companies attempt to strike a balance between gaining profits and providing social good, a new, crucial question arises: To what degree do companies that strive to be both socially good and profitable fail in accomplishing one or the other. This committee will analyze what it takes to build a socially aware company in a world of increasing inequality.

China’s rapid industrialization over the past decades has brought with it both improved economic prosperity, and the deadly consequences of severe pollution. Now the world’s second largest economy, in 2008 China also became the world’s greatest greenhouse gas emitter, and in 2010 the world’s greatest energy consumer. While China faces a multitude of environmental and energy challenges, these challenges also bring about opportunity for the development China’s renewable energy sector. Development of clean energy capacity and technology is needed now more than ever, with the nation’s ballooning energy demand, pollution crisis, and environmental degradation. The question now to be answered is how China will successfully transition to a clean energy future within the changing global energy context.

07
This committee is responsible for publishing the daily newsletter and other media projects at the Forum. In creating their own work, delegates will discuss journalistic ethics, sourcing, and other article-writing techniques. This committee will also compare and contrast the role of the media in different countries, covering topics like government controls and censorship.

As a member of the 2016 World Youth Economic Forum Mock Trial simulation, you will be arguing a case from 2011, Qihoo v. Tencent. This case involves two of China’s largest technology companies and the ultimatum they gave their over one billion consumers: choosing one of their two services.

Whether you are a Supreme Court justice, an attorney, or a witness, you will think deeply about anti-monopoly legislation, market dominance and the economic imbalances they create, and the effects of business competition on consumers. You will learn how to debate effectively, think critically, and speak extemporaneously, and I cannot wait to see the creativity and intellect you will bring to the table.

09
In this committee, we will be exploring the legal issues surrounding the regulation of the Internet. We will focus on the rights and responsibility of Internet intermediaries like Facebook, Twitter and Weibo. The rise of platforms like these has changed the way people communicate and do business with one another. Increasingly governments are putting pressure on the Internet intermediaries to regulate the content that is created by users on their sites. This poses challenges to these companies business models and their user’s right to free speech. These issues will be explored through a mock trial in the European Court of Justice. Participants will gain an understanding of international and European law in this area as well as the impact this has for the commercial development of these companies.

In this committee, we will be looking at achieving education as equal opportunity in a global context of increasing inequality. In both more and less economically developed nations, a patch work of public, private and non-profit education providers are producing a spectrum of outcomes with.Whilelabor markets increasingly desire higher levels of technical and creative education backgrounds, increasing divergence in the quality and quantity of such education provided is fueling already exacerbated social inequality and lowering mobility. In response, new opportunities leveraging both traditional policy solutions and emerging technology are gaining attention for their potential. By examining the current challenges to equitable education and attempted reform programs, reviewing efficacy of institutional and teaching practices, applying this knowledge to an on-going case study, and drawing on your personal insights and ideas, you will gain a new understanding for education policy and its effect on social [in]equality dynamics.
